Bill Mackey, Architect

Since beginning practice in 1981 I have been involved in several award-winning projects
as a project designer and project architect. My experience includes all aspects of the
profession from design to construction documents and project administration. My work
includes commercial, residential, retail and institutional projects varying in scale from the
very small to very large and complex.

From the beginning it has been my philosophy that in order to design good buildings you
must first learn how to build them. Or, as one of my first teachers told me, “The reason
the Italians know how to design good suits is that they know how to make good suits.”

The common thread in my work is the belief in architecture’s potential to enrich the lives
of those it touches. This optimism is most clearly embodied in attention to context,
human scale, and space. Good buildings should be good neighbors. They should
communicate modesty, clarity of purpose and honesty and integrity of materials and
forms.
