Regular Fishing Seasons: Year Round (April 1- March 31)

 

Limit: Daily Bags limit is 5 per day, 10 in possession, for Trout and Salmon. Up to 2 Cutthroat Trout may be included in the limit of 5 Trout. For other areas, please refer to the current New Mexico Fishing Proclamation.

 

License Requirement: ALL persons 12 years or older, while fishing in New Mexico, must have on their person a current New Mexico fishing license. Anglers 11 yrs. Of age and younger do not need a fishing license. Resident anglers 70 years of age and older need a Free Fishing License available at any Department office or license vendor. New Mexico fishing licenses are not required on Tribal Reservations and private Class A Lakes.

(Vendor fees are $1 extra per document. All fishing licenses include trout stamp.)

* = NO Habitat Improvement Stamp, Habitat Management & Access Validation or 2nd Rod Validation is required with this license. This free License is available to Residents ONLY.

 

Habitat Stamp: $5.00 - A Habitat Improvement Stamp is required for all anglers from age 12 and older who fish on US Forest Service and BLM lands in NM and must be purchased separately. Only one stamp need be purchased in any license year and is required for 1-day, 5-day, or annual fishing license. Habitat Improvement funds are used for such projects as restoration of lakes and trout streams. 

 

Habitat Management & Access Validation: $4.00 -A Habitat Management & Access Validation must be purchased separately by all anglers, hunters and trappers. Only those younger than 18, 100% Disabled Resident Veterans and Resident anglers 70 & older are exempt from purchasing this validation. Only one validation need be purchased in any license year and is required for 1-day, 5-day, or annual fishing licenses.

Fawn Lakes – two lakes totaling two acres, adjacent to the Red River, two miles downstream of Red River, adjacent to the Fawn Lakes Campground. Rainbow Trout.

 

Goose Lake – a five acre, shallow lake located at the head of Goose Creek. Cutthroat

 

Cabresto Lake- a 15-acre lake six miles northeast of Questa near Cabresto Rd. Rainbow, Brook, and Cutthroat. 

 

Eagle Rock Lake- 11 miles west to Questa. A 3.5-acre lake fed by the Red River.

 

Middle Fork Lake- 6-acre lake near Wheeler Peak Wilderness. Rainbow Cutthroat.

 

Lost Lake - Inside the Wheeler Peak Wilderness. No Motorized vehicles allowed.

 

Horseshoe Lake- inside the Wheeler Peak Wilderness. No Motorized vehicles allowed

 

The Red River- the main stem of the Red River from the Town to Rio Grande.  Fishing is allowed along the river except in private areas. Rainbow and Brown.

 

Red River Beaver Ponds- located at the end of HWY 578, on Middle Fork Road.

 

Eagle Nest Lake- located 18 miles southeast of Red River in Eagle Nest. 5 AM – 10 PM

 

Cimarron River- Between Eagle Nest and Cimarron, east end of Tolby Campground downstream 1.4 miles to U.S. 64 bridge. 2 Trout, at least 12” long, per day or in possession.
